Bruna de Marchi studied political science and sociology in Italy and the US in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Formally retired, she is presently associated with the Center for the Study of the Sciences and Humanities (SVT – Senter for vitenskapsteori) at the University of Bergen, Norway. She maintains teaching, training and consulting commitments with various institutions. For many years, she was in charge of the Mass Emergencies Programme at the Institute of International Sociology of Gorizia, Italy. In the early 1990s, she was with the European Commission Joint Research Centre at Ispra, as seconded national expert. Her main research interests are the social and organizational aspects of emergencies and crises, risk perception, communication and governance, public engagement in health, environment and disaster policies.
